The Build Process

01

Initial consultation

We sit down — at the workshop, or over a call if that's easier — and talk through how you plan to use the van. Out of that conversation comes a clear scope, with no commitment yet.

02

Design & quote

We sketch the layout, spec the systems, and send through a detailed itemised quote. No vague numbers — you'll see what every line costs, so you can trim or extend the build with full visibility.

03

Sign-off & sourcing

Once you've green-lit the quote, we lock in your slot in the workshop calendar and start sourcing the long-lead items — lithium cells, specific timbers, anything bespoke. By the time your van rolls in, most of the materials are already here, so the build starts moving from day one.

04

Build

Four to ten weeks in our Tingalpa workshop, depending on the design. We'll send progress photos at the major milestones — strip-out, framing, electrical first-fix, cabinetry, finishing — and you're welcome to drop in any time to see how it's coming along.

05

Handover

A full, no-rush walkthrough on every system — batteries, solar, water, gas, fans. You'll go home with manuals, wiring diagrams and a maintenance sheet, and we're happy to help with rego or insurance if you'd like a hand.

06

Aftercare

We're not going anywhere. If something rattles loose six months later, drop it in — we back what we build, and we're still here long after the invoice has cleared.

What we build

Hoppin Habitats is a small Brisbane-based custom campervan workshop. We do full custom builds out of our Tingalpa workshop — from a stripped-out shell through to a finished, registered, ready-to-drive campervan. Most clients bring their own van; if you're still shopping, we're happy to point you at the right platform. Every build is designed around how you actually want to use it.

Bring any van

Hiace, Sprinter, Crafter, Transit, LDV — we've built across most of the common van platforms. If you've already got a van, we'll fit it out. If you're still shopping, we'll point you at a model and year that suits the build you've got in mind.

Custom cabinetry

15mm structural plywood forms the bones of every build, finished with a custom timber touch where it shows. Curved ceilings, fluted detailing, drawer slides chosen to hold up to corrugations — built to be genuinely lived in, day after day.

Full electrical systems

Dual battery setups (lithium or AGM depending on your budget), solar arrays sized to your power draw, pure-sine inverters for 240V appliances, and properly fused 12V circuits. Everything's labelled, documented and serviceable down the track — so you (or any auto-electrician) can work on it years later without guesswork.

Plumbing & hot water

Fresh and grey water tanks, 12V pressure pumps, gas or diesel hot water units, sinks, pull-out tap-showers and outdoor shower setups. We'll size the system to how you actually camp — bush trips need different plumbing to caravan parks, and we'll talk through what suits you before locking anything in.

Cooking — induction or gas

Most clients now go induction — cleaner, no certification headaches, simpler in-cabin. We still do compliant gas installs (with a certified gas-fitter) for builds that need it: LPG storage, regulators, copper lines and certified shut-offs. Either way, we'll walk you through the trade-offs so it's an easy call.

Insulation, ventilation & layout

Wool batts, closed-cell foam, vapour barriers, vent fans and roof hatches. Bed and living layouts are drawn to your dimensions and the way you sleep, work and cook. We build for the climate you'll actually be in — Queensland heat, cold-snap inland, or coastal damp.

Why Hoppin Habitats

We focus on what we do well

We don't try to be everything. What we do well is custom timber interiors, properly engineered electrical and plumbing, and builds that hold up. Across every van platform we've worked on, the workshop's full of jigs, templates and patterns we've refined over years.

We rent what we build

Our rental fleet is built in the same workshop, by the same hands. Those vans cover serious kilometres every year, in every season, with all kinds of drivers. If something doesn't hold up, we find out quickly and don't use it again — and your build benefits from everything we've learned.

Brisbane-built, Brisbane-backed

We work out of a proper workshop in Tingalpa — full tooling, dust extraction, lifts and a certified electrical bench. Builds happen indoors, on schedule, and you're welcome to drop in. And we're not going anywhere: if something comes up two years down the track, you can pick up the phone and reach the people who built your van.

In their words

From Google reviews — 4.8 / 5, 6 reviews to date.

Tarik is an absolute magician!!! His eye for detail and previous architecture skills made my dreams a reality right before my eyes. He was able to guide me towards the most space-effective and stylish design for my Sprinter and completed the job in a timely manner. He also has a wealth of knowledge on mechanical issues that were an absolute life saver. Highly recommend.
Anna Wood · Sprinter fit-out
So much easier talking to one person through the whole process of design and install. Tarik guided us in person for the initial consult, then provided continuous video updates and opportunities for customisation throughout the build process. Some of his suggestions actually reduced the price and was so much better value than larger companies. I couldn't be happier with the end result and enjoyed the personalised experience of a small business.
Jamison Fletcher · Fit-out
I've known the owner for over a year now and he is amazing and a true professional. I'm really impressed with the design and finishing. What stands out most, though, is the owner's genuine care for his clients. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a beautiful, reliable campervan built with heart!

What it costs

Every build is quoted individually, because every build is genuinely different. As a rough guide, full custom Hiace fitouts typically sit between $15,000 and $30,000+ depending on scope — a basic bed-storage-power layout sits at the lower end, while a full cabinetry build with lithium, solar, hot water, gas and a custom timber touch sits higher. Partial fitouts and alterations are quoted separately and start lower again.

Send through your van details (model, year, current state) and how you plan to use it, and we'll come back with a real number — not a ballpark.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a build take?

Most builds run four to ten weeks from sign-off, depending on the design. A simple bed-and-storage layout sits at the short end; a full cabinetry, electrical, plumbing and gas build takes the full window. We'll give you a clear timeline at the quote stage.

Do you supply the van?

Either way works for us. Most clients bring their own van — anything from a Hiace up to a Sprinter or larger. If you'd rather start from scratch, we're happy to help you source the right platform for your build.

Can I supply my own parts?

Yes, absolutely. Bring your fridge, your cooktop, your timber — we're glad to work them in. If something doesn't look like it'll hold up, we'll flag it for you, but the final call is always yours.

Do you do partial fitouts?

Yes, plenty of them. Solar add-ons, kitchen swaps, flooring, leak repairs, half-finished van rescues — all welcome. If it's a Hiace and it needs work, send us a few photos and we'll take a look.

Do you do hitop or roof conversions?

We do fitouts inside hitop bodies on a few van platforms. We don't fabricate pop-tops in-house, but we're happy to coordinate with a trusted roof-cutter as part of a larger build, so you've still got one point of contact.
