How Campervan Hire Works

From quote to pickup — the full process

The Hoppin Habitats hire process, start to finish

Hiring a campervan should feel straightforward, especially if it's your first time. Here's exactly how it works with us — from the moment you pick a van through to the keys landing in your hand at our Tingalpa workshop in Brisbane.

Every hire comes with full comprehensive insurance, RACQ roadside assist, bedding and cooking gear all sorted before you arrive. Pricing is upfront, the bond is fully refundable, and there's nothing buried in the fine print. If anything below isn't clear, give us a call on 0423 611 100 and we'll happily talk it through with you.

The Booking Process

01

Reserve your van

Browse the fleet at /campervan-hire-brisbane/, pick your van, and use the built-in calculator on each van page to get an instant quote for your dates. Happy with the numbers? Send through a booking enquiry on the contact page with your dates and driver details. Once we've confirmed availability, lock in your dates with a $250 reservation fee — bank transfer to us, the van comes off the calendar, and you're in. The $250 comes off your total, with the balance paid on pickup day.

02

Review and sign the hire agreement

We'll email through the hire agreement and full terms and conditions — all in plain English. Have a read at your own pace, sign and return it, and you're all set. If anything raises a question, give us a call on 0423 611 100 and we'll happily talk it through.

03

Pick up and hit the road

Head to our Tingalpa workshop — about 10 minutes from Brisbane Airport — on your pickup day. We'll walk you through the van together: fridge, cooking gear, sink, bed setup, awning, where the spare tyre lives, plus anything specific to your build. Once we've run through the pre-hire checklist and you're comfortable behind the wheel, you're on your way.

What's included with every hire

The vans are handed over ready to drive away — everything below is part of the price you're quoted, with no add-ons or hidden charges.

Insurance & safety

Full comprehensive insurance is in place from the moment you collect the van, with RACQ roadside assist included as well. The bond is there to cover the insurance excess in the rare event of an at-fault claim.

Bedding

Sheets, blankets and pillows are all made up and ready to fall into on day one. If you prefer your own sleeping bag, you're welcome to bring it along.

Kitchen

Cooking gear, cutlery, plates, mugs, kettle, basic pots and pans — all in the van and ready to go. The fridge is cold and waiting for your first shopping run.

200 km/day

200 km a day is included in your hire, averaged across the whole trip. If you go over the allowance, anything extra is settled at a small per-kilometre rate when you return — most trips sit comfortably inside it.

Minimum 3 days

The minimum hire is three days, though most people end up taking the van out for a week or more.

Walkthrough & demo

A proper, no-rush handover at pickup — we go through every system in the van together so you leave feeling confident.

What's not included

A few things you'll take care of yourself along the way — listed plainly, so there's no guesswork.

Fuel

You'll pick the van up with a full tank — just bring it back the same way and you're sorted.

Tolls

Any toll road charges from your trip are passed on at cost — we'll send through a clear summary if there are any to settle.

Food & drinks

The fridge is yours to stock however suits the trip — coffee, cold beers, a few days' worth of groceries.

Camping fees

Caravan park sites, national park camp fees and the like are paid direct as you go. There are plenty of great free camps along the East Coast as well.

Late return fees

If the van comes back late, late fees apply as set out in the hire agreement. Easiest fix — give us a call as soon as your plans look like they're shifting, and we'll do our best to work something out.

Bond options — Standard or Reduced rate

You'll have two bond options to choose from at booking. The insurance cover is the same either way — the difference comes down to how much risk you'd like to share, and how that flows through to your daily rate.

Standard — $1,500 bond

This is the default option, and the one most travellers go with — a $1,500 bond and the full daily rate. The bond is refunded in full once the van comes back undamaged.

Reduced rate — $4,000 bond

A higher bond in exchange for a 10% discount on the daily rate. Less risk on our side means a better price on yours — worth a look on longer hires where the savings really stack up.

One-way hire — Brisbane to Sydney or Melbourne

Happy to set up a one-way hire — pick up in Brisbane and drop off in Sydney or Melbourne. There's a relocation fee on top of the standard hire price, and how much it is depends on timing. Sometimes we have a van that needs to come south anyway, in which case the relocation cost can drop significantly. Mention one-way when you enquire and we'll work out the numbers together.

Driver requirements

Just the standard requirements our insurer asks for — nothing unusual. If anything below feels close to the line for you, give us a call and we'll talk it through.

Minimum age 21

Every driver listed on the hire agreement needs to be at least 21 at the time of pickup — that's our insurer's requirement.

Full licence only

You'll need a full driver's licence to take the van out. Our insurer only covers drivers on a full licence — no learners or provisionals.

Australian or international

Both Australian and international licences are welcome. If your licence isn't in English, just bring along a certified translation and we're good to go.

Damage and incidents on the road

Comprehensive insurance covers most scenarios you might run into, and the bond is there to cover the insurance excess if a claim comes through. RACQ roadside assist is included as well, for mechanical, tyre or battery issues. Whatever happens — a chip in the windscreen, a flat, a scrape in a carpark, a wallaby on the highway — just give us a call first. We'll talk you through it calmly and get the right help on its way. No drama, no judgement.

Bringing the van back

The return is at the same place as pickup — our Tingalpa workshop, on the date and time confirmed in your booking. We'll run through a quick post-hire walkthrough together, check the van over, and once everything looks good the bond is on its way back to you, typically within 15 days.

Full tank back

You picked the van up with a full tank, same way coming back. There's usually a servo within a few minutes of the workshop if you need a top-up on the way in.

Bring it back clean

Same way we hand it to you: surfaces wiped, rubbish out, dishes done. A tidy return keeps the bond turnaround quick. If the van needs a deep clean we'll deduct a cleaning fee from the bond.

Pre-hire photos

At pickup we run through a short photo checklist together — seven photos around the van plus an odometer reading. Takes a couple of minutes and gives both of us a shared record of how the van looked before your trip.

Post-hire photos

The same seven photos again at drop-off, plus the final odometer. Side-by-side with the pre-hire shots, this is what closes out the bond — quick, straightforward, no surprises either way.

Content creator bonus

If you've taken photos or video on your trip that you're happy for us to use on the site or socials, send them through and we'll credit you back via the bond. $20 for the first piece we use, $5 each after that, capped at $100 per booking. If you're a serious content creator with bigger ambitions for the work — drone footage, polished edits, a proper shoot — give us a call on 0423 611 100. Happy to talk through something custom.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book?

As early as you can manage, especially for school holidays, Easter and the Christmas/New Year window — peak dates are often booked out months ahead. For off-peak trips (autumn, wet season), a few weeks' notice is usually plenty.

Can I cancel my booking?

Yes, you can. The $250 reservation fee is fully refundable if you cancel more than 10 days before pickup. Within 10 days of pickup, the reservation fee is forfeited. The full cancellation terms are spelled out clearly in the hire agreement we send through on confirmation.

What if the van breaks down?

Every van comes with RACQ roadside assist included, so help is always close by. Call RACQ first for mechanical, tyre or battery issues, then give us a quick call too and we'll help sort the rest from our end. Most things are resolved on the side of the road within an hour or two.

Is there a kilometre limit?

You've got 200 km per day included, averaged across the whole trip. Anything over is charged at a small per-kilometre rate when you return the van. Most East Coast trips sit comfortably inside the limit, so it rarely comes into play.

Can I take it to Fraser Island or 4WD tracks?

The Archi 4X4 is the one purpose-built for off-road and remote tracks, though it's currently booked long-term. The Archi ii and Hitop Hiace are 2WD vans — they're great on sealed roads and well-maintained gravel, but not suited to Fraser, sand driving or serious 4WD tracks.

Can I sleep in the van at any campsite?

The vans are self-contained for cooking and sleeping, which gives you a lot of flexibility — though local rules still apply. Free camps and most caravan parks are fine. Some council areas restrict overnight stays, so it's always worth a quick look at the signage before you settle in.

Pets allowed?

Case-by-case, and we're happy to chat. We're dog-friendly people ourselves, but the van also becomes someone else's home next week — so it depends on the trip. Mention your pet when you enquire and we'll talk through cleaning expectations and any extra bond conditions together.

Ready?

Ready to start the process?

Pick a van, grab a quote, and send through your dates whenever you're ready — we'll take care of the rest.
